Speedway may look chaotic — bikes sliding sideways, no brakes, pure adrenaline — but the scoring system is surprisingly simple. And that’s part of what makes the sport so exciting: every point counts.
The Standard System: 3–2–1–0
Most heats (races) feature four riders over four laps. The points are easy to follow:
- 1st place → 3 points
- 2nd place → 2 points
- 3rd place → 1 point
- 4th place (or if a rider doesn’t finish) → 0 points
Example: If a rider wins three heats and finishes third in another, they score 10 points total.
This 3–2–1–0 system is the worldwide standard for motorcycle speedway.
How Winners Are Decided
In many individual events, the rider with the most points after all heats is crowned the winner.
But in some formats — including the Speedway Grand Prix — the top scorers advance to semifinals and a final heat, where the winner of that last race takes the trophy, even if another rider scored more points earlier in the night.
In league matches, each rider’s points are added to their team’s total. The team with the higher score wins the match.
Example: If Team A’s riders score 46 points across 15 heats and Team B’s riders score 44, Team A wins the match 46–44.
Variations and Exceptions
While 3–2–1–0 is the global rule of speedway, a few formats make exceptions:
- If a rider is excluded or can’t start, a heat may run with three (or even two) competitors.
- In pairs competitions, such as the Speedway of Nations, a 4–3–2–0 system is used. That means finishing 2nd and 3rd (5 points combined) can beat 1st and 4th (3 points).
- In the U.S., handicap races sometimes put six riders on track at once, with adjusted scoring.
- Other special events may feature five or more riders, again with tailored points systems.
Simple toLearn, Tough to Master
For new fans, speedway scoring couldn’t be easier. But for riders and teams, every point is a battle. Gaining one extra point with a clever overtake — or protecting second place from an opponent — can decide a whole event.
And that’s the beauty of it: a system simple enough for anyone to follow, yet intense enough to create drama in every single heat.
Speedway’s points system proves that sometimes the simplest rules make for the most exciting sport.
